Day 176, Sunday August 22, 2021

Carl Newhall Lean-to campsite to Mountain View Spring stealth site - 13.0 miles hiked today - 2127.5 total AT miles to date

Another day, another four mountains to summit.  The day broke foggy and overcast so our hopes of spotting Katahdin today were not met.  It threatened rain all morning, but never actually opened up.  A shame really because the rain might have cooled things down.

We started the day climbing Gulf Hagas mountain, filled in quick succession by the West peak, and Hay Mountain.  We then climbed Whirr Cap mountain, the last tall mountain before Katahdin.  There were actually some day hikers at the top, who had hiked in from an access road nearby.  We were disappointed not to have the view we’d hope for of Katahdin, but not really surprised.

The afternoon’s hike was on more level and forgiving terrain and we made up for the slow going over the mountains.  We have about 50 miles to cover in the next three days to get to the end of the 100 mile wilderness, and the last push to Katahdin.

Until next time…
