Day 175, Saturday August 21, 2021

Fourth Mountain stealth site to Carl Newhall Lean-to campsite -  13,7 miles hiked today - 2114.5 total AT miles to date

And the mountains just keep coming.  Our third day in the 100 mile wilderness and we tackled Mount Three and a Half (odd name!), Third Mountain, Columbus Mountain, and Chairback Mountain.  All four were back to back and took up our entire morning and into the afternoon.  Only a few offered significant views, but were equally challenging.

The weather continues to be hot and humid, forcing multiple water breaks and thorough soaking from sweat.  You’d think the mountains of Maine would be cooler.

During the afternoon, we worked our way down this range and started up the next series of peaks before stopping for the day.  I will say that the climbs and descents on these groups of peaks have proved easier than prior ones, as the trail designers graciously provided series of stones to use as stepping stones in many steep spots.  Definitely easier than the hand over hand scrambles that are the norm.

Tomorrow we tackle four more mountains including the White Cap Mountain, which is supposed to offer the first glimpse of Katahdin.  It’s supposed to be overcast and rainy tomorrow though, so it’s unlikely we’ll see much.

Until next time…
