Day 174, Friday August 20, 2021

Wilson Valley Lean-to campsite to Fourth Mountain stealth campsite - 11.8 miles hiked today - 2100.8 total AT miles to date

We passed the last significant milestone today, reaching the 2100 miles completed mark at the top of Fourth Mountain today.  The next milestone is the top of Katahdin at the end of the trail, 93 miles ahead.

We’d hoped to make 14 miles today but ended up pulling up short.  Another hot, humid day with limited water sources made the going very tough.  The first half of the day included the long climb up Barren Mountain and across the Barren Ledges.  We stopped for lunch just after cresting Barren Mountain, near the remnants of an old fire tower.

After lunch, it was down the steep backside of the mountain before starting up Fourth mountain late in the afternoon.  Fourth mountain had the 2100 mile stones, and after snapping a couple of pictures and descending back down, we we’re ready to call it a day.

Tomorrow we have four more mountains to conquer and again hope to do 14 miles or so. Another 20 miles of mountainous terrain, and then we should have some relatively level ground for the next 40 miles as we approach the end.  The last climb up Katahdin is supposed to be one of the hardest of all.  We’ll see.

Until next time…
