Day 171, Tuesday August 17, 2021

Kennebec River stealth site to Moxie Bald Mountain Pond Lean-to campsite  -18.9 miles hiked today - 2060.7 total AT miles to date

Although we had two mountains to climb today, we were still able to crank out 18+ miles today.  The day was a little warmer than it has been, necessitating more frequent water stops, but the terrain was again less challenging than expected, despite having to climb two 2000ft + mountains.

Pleasant Pond mountain topped out at 2470 ft, and was a gradual climb and descent.  The second climb was Moxie Bald Mountain at 2629 ft, and proved to have more severe slopes both up and down.  Great views from both, and not bad compared to the 4000 footers we’d recently encountered.  The top of Moxie Bald also had a few tight squeezes and rock scrambles, but all were overcome easily.

By late in the day, we’d arrived at the Moxie Bald Pond and pitched our tents next to the pond.  Tomorrow we’ve decided that we will push to Monson and Shaws, and get a day’s head start on the 100 mile wilderness.

Until next time…
