Day 170, Monday August 16, 2021

East Flagstaff Lake campsite to Kennebec River stealth site - 19.0 miles hiked today - 2041.8 total AT miles to date

We were able to push some high mileage today, as the weather was mild, the terrain was forgiving and no major ups or downs.  We started early (around 6) and knocked out 10 miles by 10:30  We passed a couple of ponds, and had a few road walks where the trail followed a gravel road, allowing for a quicker pace (no roots, rocks, or mud).

We arrived at the Kennebec River by 2pm, and were shuttled across in a canoe, after waiting our turn.  The ATC provides this service free of charge to avoid having thru hikers washed away in the rushing currents.  Once across, we stopped at the Sterling Inn for an early dinner, before finding a stealth site for the night.

It’s unlikely that we’ll be able to maintain this pace over the next couple of days, but we’d like to make it to Monson and Shaws Hostel by Thursday.  That’s where we’ll stage for the 100 mile wilderness, the last challenge before Katahdin.

Until next time…
