Day 169, Sunday August 15, 2021

Stratton ME to East Flagstaff Lake campsite - 17.9 miles hiked today - 2022.8 total AT miles to date

We got an early start today as our shuttle driver, Squirrel, picked us up at the White Wolf and got us back to the trail.  He was full of useful hints and anecdotes, and offered his services (for a healthy fee) if we needed transportation after finishing the trail.  Bidding him goodbye, we struck out on a clear and cool morning escorted in by the rainy cold front we’d seen yesterday.  Although steep in parts, the trail was well maintained, with almost no mud, and we were able to keep up a brisk pace.  The views from the Bigelows and Avery mountains were great, with none of the fog or low clouds we’d seen in recent days.

After a brief lunch stop, we headed back down the back side of the ridge and arrived at our evening’s destination well before sunset. The day of rest certainly seemed to allow for more stamina today, and we made very good time.  The terrain (and weather) is supposed to be very moderate for the next several days, and we expect to churn out some good miles.  If we hit the mileage we expect tomorrow, we will get to experience the Kennebec River ferry, another first.

Until next time…
