Day 136, Tuesday July 13, 2021

Peru Peak shelter campsite to Little Rock Pond shelter campsite - 10.0 miles hiked today - 1674.0 total AT miles hiked to date

The weather was better today with only light rain.  My gear fared fine last night in my tent, despite the overnight thunderstorms.  The mud seemed slightly better today as well, with some stretches several hundred yards long with no mud at all.  Since the trail was marginally better, the AT designers decided to throw a couple of steep rock scrambles in to ensure we didn’t get too many miles in.  In my hampered condition, these took longer than plodding through the mud.

On top of the mountains, it looked like there might be great views, but none that we could see due to the rain clouds and fog.  By late afternoon we’d reached Little Rock Pond, a beautiful mountain top lake.  The shelter was right next to it and the sky had started rumbling, so we stopped for the day.  Another 10 mile day, short of what I’d been shooting for.  We ran into a family at the shelter we’d crossed paths with a few times before, and their 4 kids had a great time jumping off of a 20 foot rock into the lake.

Dinner and then to bed early again tonight.  Tomorrow planning for a 14 mile day if weather and terrain permits.

Until next time…
