Day 64, Sunday May 2, 2021

Ephesians

Matt’s Creek campsite to Brown Mountain Creek shelter campsite - 21.3 miles hiked today - 807.3 total AT miles hiked to date.

Packed up early this morning, and hiked the mile to the James River trailhead to meet Bryce.  Crossing the river on the longest footbridge on the AT was quite memorable.  At the other end was the parking area where I settled in to wait.  In less than 15 minutes (around 7:45), Bryce arrived and we headed into Glasgow for a minor resupply to get me to Waynesborough later in the week.  Pickings at the grocery (really a convenience) store were slim, but I was able to fortify my food bag with some additional meats, sides, and tortilla bread.

While I’m town, Bryce pointed out a thru hike shelter in a park in town.  It even had a shower with a water heater. Seemed odd as it was more than 5 miles off of the trail, but it was a nice one.

Back to the trailhead, we struck out at about 8:45.  Bryce hiked the morning with me to the top of the first major climb (Big Rocky Row), and then turned around and hiked back to his car and drove around to the next road crossing to meet back up with refreshments.  I continued on, up and over Bluff mountain and reached Bryce again at the Punchbowl overlook on the BRP.  He had iced drinks and snacks, and we chilled out there for a while.  The college crew from Cornell caught up to us there and Bryce shared the rest of his refreshments.

I finally headed out after 30 minutes of relaxation, pressing on up and over Rice mountain, to a nice campsite right on the Brown Mountain Creek, near the shelter.  Along the way, I passed yet another milestone- 800 miles hiked.  They seem to be coming quicker all the time.  Some great views and landmarks passed throughout the afternoon, including a memorial for a small boy lost in these woods in the 1800’s.  All told for the day, I had climbed more than 4500 feet of vertical trail for the day in just over 21 miles.  Tomorrow will likely not be as long a day, as continual rail is forecast.

Until next time…
