Day 167, Friday August 13, 2021

Spaulding Mountain Lean-to campsite to Stratton, ME - 13.5 miles hiked today - 2004.9 total AT miles to date.

Well today was certainly a big day.  Two major milestones - less than 200 miles to go, and over 2000 miles completed. We had planned on only hiking 9 miles today, as we had some tough 4K mountains ahead, and then pushing in the last 4.5 miles tomorrow to get us into town for a Nero on Saturday.  But by the time we got to where we originally planned to stop, we decided to push on to the road, and head into town tonight.  Tomorrow will now be a well earned Zero instead of a Nero.

As we climbed up and over Spaulding Mountain this morning, we arrived at a plaque commemorating the point where the final link of the AT was completed, connecting Georgia to Maine in 1937.  Shortly after that we hit mile 1993.1, exactly 200 miles from the finish at Mt. Khatadin.  The climb up Sugarloaf Mountain followed, which wasn’t overly tough, but the descent down the backside was steep and tricky.

We reached the bottom at Carrabasset river around 11, where we had lunch.  The afternoon entailed climbing South and then North Crocker mountains before reaching our original destination by mid afternoon.  We decided at that point to push on the the road and head into town early.  The remaining trail was a moderate downhill slope, allowing us to cover the remaining ground quickly.  At the parking area, a young couple from Boston who were vacationing in the area offered us a ride into town.  Quickly accepting, we were soon at the White Wolf Inn, our home for the next 36 hours.  Tomorrow we will take care of our resupply and other chores and head back out to the trail on Sunday.  188.2 miles to go - around 2 more weeks.

Until next time…
