Webster stealth site to Lake of the Clouds Hut - 8.7 miles hiked today - 1858.8 total AT miles hiked to date
This morning broke very cold and windy, but no rain. We got a very early start hoping to get over Mt Washington before the end of the day. Alas, that was not to happen. We worked our way up and over the crest of Mt Webster first thing, while fighting gale force winds. It’s amazing how well a 30 lb pack can work as a wind sail. We were once again in the Alpine Zone, with no trees for protection. Right after Webster we climbed Mt. Jackson, and the headed down to the Mitzpah Spring hut. We were able to get leftover pancakes for 2nd breakfast, quite a treat.
After our repast, we resumed climbing, with Mt. Pierce, Mt Clinton, Mt. Eisenhower, and Mt Jackson in rapid succession. These involved Alpine crest maneuvers, with only a few really technical climbs that challenged my one armed prowess. The last two mountains, Monroe and Franklin slowed us down significantly, as we reached the Lake of the Clouds hut around 4 pm, just at the foot of the tallest mountain in the Whites, Mt. Washington. It was too late in the day to attempt this climb, so we stopped at the hut for recommendations on camping sites nearby. What we found out is that all appropriate sites are below the tree line, a mile straight down a side trail. Not willing (or physically able at this point) to make that trek, we elected to bite the bullet and spring for a very expensive bunk in the Hut. This included a bunk bed, turkey dinner, big breakfast and hot chocolate. At least we are out of the elements. Tomorrow is Mt. Washington.
Until next time…
