Day 153, Friday July 30, 2021

Zeecliff campsite to Mt Webster stealth campsite - 11.2 miles hiked today - 1850.1 total AT miles hiked to date

Today was a mixed bag of experiences, with several culinary treats along the way.  It had rained overnight, but had stopped by the time we packed up.  Temperatures had dropped into the high thirties during the night and the morning’s hike was cold and foggy.

Within an hour, we came across the Zeeland Falls hut, where we stopped to refill water.  While there, we were able to get some free leftovers of eggs and sausage, as well as a Blueberry coffee cake as part of the AMC thru hiker card we’d secured at a previous AMC shelter.  Always good to take advantage of free food.

The balance of the morning, and into the afternoon we climbed up and over the rest of Mt Webster, then Wiley Range, and finally down Ripley falls to the highway at 302.  In that parking lot were two of the ladies from the Glenville church where we had attended last Sunday, where they were set up with trail magic.  As we caught up with them, they prepared  meatball sandwiches made on buttered Texas toast.  Amazing!  Also got sweet tea and homemade cookies.

After a brief respite there, we started up one of the more challenging White mountains, Mt. Webster.  On the way up, the rain started again, blowing hard and cold.  As we crossed the Alpine line again, and trees disappeared and rocky outcroppings had to be crossed in 30 - 40 mph winds.  After about 10 minutes of this, we dipped back into the trees and found a stealth site for the night, with plans to crest Webster in the morning.

Tomorrow we will pass two more huts, so are looking forward to the possibility of more leftovers.

Until next time…
