Kinsman Notch to Eliza Brook shelter campsite - 7.5 miles hiked today - 1811.2 total AT miles hiked to date
After a restful day yesterday we headed back out to where we’d left off Saturday, at the north end of Mousilauke. Heading north from there, we were back into the Whites, with another major climb ahead, Mt. Wolf. Today we encountered what had been talked about for hundreds of miles, the extreme terrain we’d face in getting through this range. Although the toughest section (the Presidentials) is still to come, Wolf provided a broad assortment of challenges to overcome. The entire climb to the top required repeated hand over hand scaling of boulders, rock ledges, and steep sections where creative gymnastics were often required. I’ve mastered the reverse one handed pull up, with a half twist.
We reached the summit of Wolf around lunchtime and started down. The climb down the backside was as difficult as the climb up had been, with the added complication of negotiating slick rocks without being able to see what’s below them. By late afternoon we’d arrived at the Eliza Brook shelter. It took us over 8 hours to cover 7.5 miles, and the next option would have meant 4 more miles of climbing. We elected to stop there for the night.
Tomorrow we tackle the Kinsman mountains, which are supposed to be more difficult than the last few days. We’ll see.
Until next time…
