Day 148, Sunday July 25, 2021

Zero day at Hikers Welcome hostel

As planned, we took today as a zero, waiting out the thunderstorms and letting our bodies have a day of rest.  As we were eating breakfast in the common room, a local man wearing a suit stopped in, dropped off some snacks, and invited us to his church just down the road.  So, at 10:45, Whipporwill, defcon, Pinot and I headed down the road to the Glenville Community Church for Sunday Services.  With the four of us in attendance, the congregation was doubled and all eight of us sang hymns, prayed, and heard a sermon from 1st Peter.  They were very welcoming, obviously geared toward thru hikers staying at the hostel.

After the service, we were invited over to the parsonage for lunch and fellowship.  They provided chicken pot pie, salad, chips, and key lime pie. The pastor regaled us with stories about his time as a re-enactor, spending time in period costume dating from the colonial days through the days of the mountain men in the mid 1800s. He’d even attended the Alafia River Rendezvous in our neck of the woods.  Quite a pleasant afternoon.

Once returning to the hostel, the afternoon was spent reorganizing and repacking our gear, doing laundry, and generally relaxing.  After fixing and eating our dinners,  Legion (one of the hostel hosts) gave us some insight into the best approach to the next couple of weeks through the Whites and beyond.

Tomorrow we will resume the journey north and tackle a couple more of the White mountains.  We don’t expect to make significant daily miles for the next several days, but should be able to make up for it when we hit Maine.

Until next time…
