Moose Mountain campsite to Smart Mountain tent site - 12.1 miles hiked today - 1774.2 total AT miles hiked to date
Today was our first big challenge of New Hampshire. We had to climb up Holtz ledge, Lambert ridge, and the steepest mountain in the region, Smart mountain. The weather cooperated again today, sunny and cool, but the trail continued to be saturated. As we hiked and climbed up these very steep inclines, we were often working our way upstream as the water drained down the trail. Some of the climbs were over rock ledges, and some were so steep that rebar ladders had been hammered into the sheer rock face. We passed a couple of mountain lakes, where we spotted ducks and turtles.
Overall, we climbed over 4400 feet today, much of it the last three miles to the summit of Smart mountain. Several good views on the climb, which allowed for brief rest stops as we took in the sights. Hiked with Pinot and Doc on and off all day, and we all settled in at the Smart mountain campsite, just short of the summit. Tomorrow morning we will climb the observation tower at the top, which should allow for a great view of the surrounding mountain ranges.
Until next time…
