Hanover NH to Moose Mountain shelter campsite - 11.1 miles hiked today - 1762.1 total AT miles hiked to date
After a much needed day off yesterday, we headed back out on the trail this morning. Before we did though, we took advantage of the free pancakes at the hostel prior to shuttling to the trail head. At the shelter, I took a picture of the wall mural (below) depicting the peaks and valleys of the entire AT, which ran the length of the wall in the common room.
Again, today was overcast and cool, but the rain chances were low, so we were optimistic that we’d stay dry today. Unfortunately there was a major thunderstorm last night (glad we were indoors), and the trail was once again awash. Our newly dry socks and shoes were quickly saturated again, but at least the mud was not as prevalent.
The terrain was moderate as we headed out, except for the flowing water running down the trail, but the weather cooperated by staying cool and dry. We ran into several SOBOs, which will continue to be the case as we continue north. By late afternoon we had climbed most of Moose mountain and got our first real view of the day. The distant mountains viewed from there are apparently the Whites that we are headed for in the next week or so. Interestingly, the trail signs in this section are bright orange, apparently so they can be seen more readily through snow and fog. It makes them hard to miss.
We rolled into the shelter around 5:30, to find a dozen or so SOBOs (southbound thru hikers) already occupying the shelter. I passed by to the tenting area which was also mostly full, but there was room next to another tent already there. As I approached, the occupant called out my name. It was Doc, who I’d last seen back in Tennessee. He’d been off the trail for a while and had passed us when we Zeroed yesterday. We caught up on his exploits over the past few months. It was good to see an old, familiar face.
Tomorrow will be a lot of climbing, as we scale Smarts mountain, with plans to stay at the Fire Wardens cabin at the top of the mountain. Another clear day on tap.
Until next time…
