Canopus Beach campsite to stealth campsite - 16.2 miles hiked today - 1443.7 total AT miles hiked to date.
A beautiful start to the day as the lake beach was serene and the water like glass. God’s creation in all it’s glory. Climbed out of the park up Shenandoah Mountain, where there were so good views. There was also a painted American flag on the rocks as a 9/11 memorial. I was glad to see it hadn’t been defaced like so many other tributes we’ve seen on the trail.
After cresting this mountain, it was up and down again for a while until we reached the RHP shelter, one of the more unique ones we’d encountered. It had been supplied with several gallons of water for us to resupply, timely as water sources were rare in this stretch. Lots of interesting perks and quirks associated with this shelter. After filling up, we moved on.

Crossing highway 52, we ran across a trail angel who was supporting a thru hiker. He had a cooler full of sodas, so I had a Dr. Pepper to cool me off some. We crossed Interstate 84, and stopped for lunch soon after. Climbing back up Mt Egbert we saw some more views of the valleys below, and then stopped at the Morgan Stewart shelter to assess our remaining miles for the day. We decided that we needed to get a few more miles in, so pushed on for another 90 minutes before stopping for the night near one of the few decent springs in the area.
Today was another PUD day with 2800 ft of ascent and 2800 feet of decent. None of the hills were particularly long or overly steep, but were challenging to negotiate one armed. Working out the best method of addressing the minor rock climbs I’ve encountered over the past couple of days, I’ll likely master it about the time I regain the use of the arm and hand. The next couple of days should be somewhat easier as we approach Connecticut. We plan to Zero Monday on a dairy farm.
Until next time…
