Day 78, Sunday May 16, 2021

Zero day in Front Royal at Mountain Home Hostel. 0 miles hiked today - 972.0 total AT miles hiked to date.

Started the day with a great breakfast at the main house, included as part of the bunk rate for the hostel. The host Lisa prepared blueberry pancakes with homemade syrups, apple cider, and fresh fruit. After breakfast, I got a ride into town to attend the John Wesley AME church service downtown.  Great gospel music, and a sermon that even referenced the Buffalo Springfield song “For What It’s Worth”.   Truly an inspirational morning.

After the service, I met up with the rest of our “tramily” (trail family), and we had a light lunch at the local Mexican restaurant (I had a taco salad). From there, we hit the local Martin’s grocery for a resupply to last us until we hit Harpers Ferry in 4 days.  Once fully stocked, our hostel host picked us back up and returned us to Mountain Home.

Once we’d restocked and repacked our packs, Scott (hostel/B&B owner) gave us an in depth tour of the homestead, sharing the history and efforts that had gone into restoring this 18th century house.  It is on the National Register of Historic Places. He shared fascinating anecdotes regarding the families who had occupied the home from the 1780’s through the civil war, WWI and since.  I’d like to come back one day and stay in the main house.

This evening we returned to town and ate at a tapas bar, reminding me of a trip to Barcelona we took early last year.  We followed dinner up with a trip to the local ice cream shop, and then back to the hostel.  In the morning we’ll enjoy another fresh breakfast and then hit the trail again.

Until next time…
