Gravel Springs Hut campsite to Mountain House hostel - 13.4 miles hiked today - 972.0 total AT miles hiked to date.
Cool and clear morning once again, another beautiful day for hiking. Heading north out of the shelter we came to South Marshall Mountain within the first mile or so, which afforded great views from a string of rock cliffs. We hung out there for a while before moving on. Then climbed North Marshall Mountain, where another string of cliff side views offered even more unique overviews of the valley below. Thanks
Lunch was at the junction of the AT and Compton Peak, where we saw dozens of day hikers. We decided at that point to push on past our planned shelter stop and head into Port Royal to the Mountain Home hostel. We’d stay there tonight and take a zero tomorrow instead of a Nero.
We arrived at the hostel by late afternoon. It was a beautiful antebellum style home with a separate cabin set aside for thru hikers. After showers and arranging for laundry, we were shuttled into town for dinner. After some juicy burgers, we made a quick stop at a grocery for some short term supplies and then caught a ride back to the hostel. In addition to the four of us in our little group, Wing Nut and Mouse were also staying here. Tomorrow we get a full breakfast as part of their package. Then we head back into town for resupply, lunch, and a trip to the outfitter. May even get a nap in the afternoon, we’ll see. The next day we’ll hit the trail again.
Until next time…
