Day 56, Saturday April 24, 2021

 Luke

War Spur Shelter campsite to Sarver Hollow Shelter campsite- 12.4 miles hiked today - 681.8 total AT miles hiked.

Today started out much like yesterday, with a couple of torturous climbs, adding in some rock scrambles to keep it interesting. We crested John’s Creek Mountain, Kelly Knob, and Piney Ridge before noon.  Temps were comfortable in the high 40s, but with overcast skies. We made it to our lunch stop at around 11:30 .  By then it was apparent that the forecasted rain was about to make it’s appearance, and everyone prepared their rain gear for the afternoon’s hike.

The initial trek after lunch was pleasant, crossing some beautiful meadows, pastures and fields, but soon the sky opened up.  The last three hours hiking was a slog, trudging through rain soaked gullys where a perfectly good trail had been just a few hours ago.

By 3:30 we’d reached the Sarver Hollow Shelter, well short of our original plan.  With all of us completely soaked, we decided to call it a day there.  In addition to Rick and I, DDD and Triple Jack, there were at least eight who stayed.  All were going to stay inside the shelter to get out of the rain and near freezing temperatures.  I elected to pitch my tent and dry out in it.  I was in the tent and in my sleeping bag by 5:30.

Hopefully tomorrow will bring some sunny weather to dry us out.

Until next time...
