Pine Swamp Shelter campsite to War Spur Shelter campsite - 12.7 miles hiked today - 669.4 total AT miles to date.
Today broke very cold, including frost on the tent. I had slept with my Sawyer Squeeze filter tucked into my sleeping bag last night to keep it from freezing. Bryce had packed up before dawn and already headed home. I was on the trail by 7:30, heading into an immediate climb up Mountain Lake and then Lone Peak.
Unfortunately the terrain was miserable, strewn with razor rocks, boulders, and difficult downhills that required meticulous focus on where to place your feet. There were a few bright spots including a lovely bridge over Laurel creek, and a scenic overlook at Wind Rock, as well as some very unique rock formations.
Because the terrain was so much more difficult than anticipated, we cut our planned 18 mile hike down to the 12.7 miles that we’d managed by 4pm. We set up near the shelter. Another packed shelter with at least 15 other people in or around it. Dinner and then to our tents by 7. Tomorrow we’ll shoot for another 18 mile hike plan, but the terrain will determine our success. It’s also supposed to rain by late morning, so that could slow progress as well.
Until next time...
