Jude, Revelation
Mark Noepel Shelter campsite to Sherman Brook campsite - 11.3 miles hiked today - 1597.2 total AT miles hiked to date
Today was one of the least pleasant days I’ve had in a while. Disappointing too, as I was planning to do 16+ miles today, I was barely able to complete 11. Thunderstorms and torrential rains all day made for extremely slow going, and the constant mud meant I spent as much time on my backside in the trail as I did upright.
The morning climbs were tough, although they culminated in reaching the highest peak in Massachusetts, Mt. Greylock. Several interesting sites there, although the rain made the views non existent. The tower was cool, and the memorial touching.
From there it was downhill for most of the rest of the day, creating the multiple slips, none of which caused any damage, but resulted in me being covered head to toe in mud. By the time I reached the road crossing in North Adams, and started up the next mountain, it was already after 5, and I knew I’d have to cut the day short. I ended up at a designated campsite, just 2 miles south of the Vermont border. Tomorrow I’ll pass both that milestone and the 1600 mile mark. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.
On a side note, I finished the read through of the Message translation of the Bible today. As noted previously, the narrative nature of this version made reading and understanding much easier, not that Revelation is ever an easy read. For now, I will use my morning Bible reading time on the trail to listen to devotionals and talks from some of my favorite Christian pastors and speakers.
Until next time…
