Communication Tower Trail campsite to Harpers Ferry, WV - 16.0 miles hiked today - 1025.1 total AT miles hiked to date.
Packed up my tent and hit the trail early for the last short section of the Roller Coaster. Fortunately I had covered most of it yesterday, so today’s section only lasted about 20 minutes. Finally putting that tortuous section behind me, the rest of the morning was relatively benign, with much fewer rocks, gentler slopes, and smoother footing. I stopped at Buzzards Rocks, but the view there was mostly blocked by trees.
By lunchtime I’d reached Keys Gap and took a short detour down Hwy 9 to the Sweet Springs Store, where I stopped for lunch. They had a grill there and I had the house special, cheese steak and fries. The AT crossing at Hwy 8 was right on the VA/WV border, so I actually hiked back into Virginia for lunch.
After lunch, the trail got a little tougher, with some rocks and a few scrambles, but nothing too severe. I crossed over the Shenandoah River Bridge and into Harpers Ferry around 4:15. As previously mentioned, Harpers Ferry is the home of the ATC and the unofficial halfway point of the trail. I’ll stay here tonight and likely head north again tomorrow.
Until next time…
