Day 159, Thursday August 5, 2021

Trident Col campsite to Full Goose Shelter campsite - 14.5 miles hiked today - 1916.2 total AT miles to date

Today was a long and exhausting day. 12+ hours of hiking and some significant technical spots that stretched my one armed capabilities to the limit.  The morning was uneventful, spent mostly climbing up to the ridge line again.  By early afternoon we’d reached another milestone, the Maine border.  Our 14th and final state.  We had lunch on some ledges just inside Maine, and then started the toughest section of the day.

Right about then, it started raining, the first rain in a few days.  The timing could not have been worse.  The next 4 miles took us over 6 hours, with sheer rock faces, rebar ladders, sudden drop offs, and generally bad and now wet trail conditions.  We hiked up and over Mt. Success, Mt. Carlo, and the east, west, and north peaks of Goose Eye Mountain. After  struggling through all that the trail threw at us, we limped into camp around 8 pm, wet, muddy, and exhausted.

One additional bright spot today.  Wild blueberries were everywhere on the trail and I had a belly full.  Tomorrow promises to be just as tough as today. Welcome to Maine!

Until next time…
