Bland VA stealth site to Jenny Knob Shelter campsite - 14.9 miles hiked today - 603.7 total AT miles hiked to date.
Beautiful morning overlooking the valley below as we packed up. You could see tiny school buses on the country roads below picking up school kids. We hiked down the mountain to the Brushy Mountain Outpost, getting there a little before they opened at 10am. Once opened, we were able to do a small resupply with enough additional food to get us to Pearisburg on Thurs. We also indulged in their grill, and I had a bacon cheeseburger, fries, and a Coke for brunch.
With that additional sustenance under our belts, we struck out on the 1 1/2 mile road track that the AT follows to get us across I-77. From there, it was back into the woods and back up onto the ridge line, covering another 11 miles, up and over Brushy Mountain to our stopping point for the night.
Along the way I saw 2 memorials set up on the trail. There was no indication who they were for, but obviously they were placed for a reason. I’ll have to research when I get home.
Another milestone was passed late afternoon as we reached the 600 mile marker. These milestones seem to be coming more frequently as our daily mileage increases.
The rest of the afternoon was uneventful, with forgiving terrain and isolated hiking. I didn’t see another soul until I arrived at the Shelter. Camping here tonight (in addition to Rick and me) are Wingnut, Der Dee Dos, and JPG (jolly purple giant), I guy we’d met weeks ago in Franklin while waiting for the controlled burn to be done.
Tomorrow we hike another 15 miles or so, and then into Woods Hole Hostel on Thursday.
Until next time...
