Matthew
Mohican Outdoor Center to Gren Anderson Shelter campsite - 20.2 miles hiked today - 1327.7 total AT miles hiked to date
As I finished the Old Testament yesterday, today was the start of the New Testament with Matthew. I have to say that since I’ve watched The Chosen (a streaming series about Jesus and his disciples) I see the gospels in a whole different light. As I listened to Matthew today, I couldn’t help envisioning the Matthew depicted in the show. It really helps bring it alive.
We headed out early today, targeting a 20 mile day, in hopes that we’d left the worst of the rocks behind in Pennsylvania. The initial hike was not too rocky and afforded some great views early on, including some near an old fire tower.
The terrain continued to fluctuate between moderate rocks and smooth trail. Passed another lake today, and saw a lot of wildlife. In addition to the usual deer, rabbits, snakes, and assorted birds, I saw a wild turkey with her chicks. I ran into a couple we’d been hiking with who had an encounter with a persistent bear as they ate breakfast this morning. Alas, I have yet to see a bear.
Late afternoon I stopped at the Brink shelter to filter some water from a nearby stream. Not far from there was a bridge that had been built by a local Scout troop. By late afternoon, we crossed a road at Branchville, and stopped at Gyps Tavern for a hot dinner. I had a bacon cheeseburger, fries, and stuffed mushrooms. Delicious! From there it was a 3 mile climb back up onto Sunrise mountain, past another fire tower, and to the shelter we were aiming for. No sign of Rick today, but he should be catching up any day.
Until next time…
